The No Depression book is an anthology of the magazine of the same name, the brainchild of Grant Alden and Peter Blackstock, two Seattle writers who tired of grunge and launched the magazine in early 1995. The magazine's first thirty-two page issue sold out. The book resulted from growing demand for back-issues of the magazine. No Depression highlights thirty-five artists including Son Volt, 16 Horsepower, Whiskeytown, Waylon Jennings, Charlie Louvin, and Johnny Rodriguez. In addition, the book introduces the ND-101, a listing of the 101 most influential alternative country music albums in print. The book's preface may explain the No Depression revolution most accurately: "an assortment of artists, who are either too old, too loud, or too eccentric for country radio. Out there in the margins, that's where some of the most rewarding music is to be found."
